Buying guide: Shop Equipment

It determines what work a shop can take on and how safely it can be done.

Lifting and holding equipment is rated by capacity, and the rating must exceed the load with margin. Engine hoists, shop cranes, chain hoists and jacks all carry rated capacities that are hard limits, not guidelines. Slings, chains and shackles have separate ratings and must be matched to the load and to the lift configuration.

Presses are rated by tonnage. A shop press at 20 tons handles bearings, u-joints and light straightening; 50 tons and above handles heavier pressing and bending. The press frame, the hydraulic jack and the bed all contribute to the usable capacity.

Storage, carts and material handling keep a shop workable. Tool cabinets, shelving, racks, bins and carts are specified by load capacity and by footprint. Welding carts hold a machine, cylinder and accessories in one movable unit, which matters more than it sounds when a machine has to move between bays.

Shop environment equipment — fume extraction, air filtration, lighting — is part of the same category because it determines whether the space is usable for welding at all.
