Tools & Shop Equipment

The tools around the weld decide how fast the job goes and how good it looks. This category covers the metalworking hand tools, clamps, positioners, cutting tools and shop equipment used in fabrication and repair.

Clamps and magnets are the most-used items in any weld shop. F-clamps and bar clamps hold parts in alignment; locking pliers and C-clamps handle awkward joints; magnetic squares and corner magnets hold steel at 90 and 45 degrees without a helper. Magnetic holding force drops sharply on thin material and on stainless and aluminium, which is worth knowing before relying on a magnet to hold a fillet.

Vises and benches anchor the work. Bench vises are rated by jaw width and opening, and the base mounting matters as much as the vise. Chain and pipe vises hold round and irregular sections that a standard vise cannot grip. Welding tables with a fixturing hole pattern (28 mm or 16 mm) let you clamp work in place with hold-downs and stops instead of tacking it down and grinding the tacks off later — for repeat work this is the single biggest time saving available.

Marking and layout tools cover the measurement end: tape measures, combination squares, levels, scribers, centre punches and markers. Welders use soapstone and paint markers on steel because ink and pencil do not survive heat and oil. Pipe fitters use wrap-arounds and flange squares where a tape measure cannot reach.

Power tools and air tools do the cutting, grinding and finishing. Angle grinders are rated by disc size and amperage; a 4.5 in grinder at 7 A and a 4.5 in at 13 A are different tools with different duty capacity. Die grinders and air tools are used where a full-size grinder cannot reach. Magnetic drills cut holes in plate and structural steel without a drill press.

Metal fabrication tools — shrinker stretchers, bead rollers, English wheels, brakes and shears — shape and form sheet and plate. Fume extraction keeps the shop air breathable and is a legal requirement in many jurisdictions for indoor welding.

Lubricants and chemicals cover anti-spatter, cutting fluid, penetrants, anti-seize and cleaners. Anti-spatter applied before welding saves more time in cleanup than it costs to apply. Each product here is listed with the service it is intended for.
