Hand Tools

Hand tools do the measuring, marking, cutting, gripping and finishing that surrounds the weld. In fabrication work they are used constantly, and the quality difference between a tool that holds its edge or its grip and one that does not shows up in hours of lost time.

The tools used most in a weld shop are clamps, pliers, hammers, chisels, files and measuring tools. Each has a specification that matters: pliers are rated by jaw length and by the wire or material they will cut; hammers by head weight and handle material; files by cut (single, double, rasp) and by shape; chisels by tip width and by whether they are for metal or masonry.

Material determines durability. Forged steel tools hold up under impact where cast tools crack. Chrome vanadium and chrome moly handles withstand more torque. Cutting edges in hardened steel hold an edge far longer than mild steel, which matters for chisels, files and snips.

Specialty fabrication hand tools — welding pliers, MIG pliers, slag hammers, chipping hammers, magnetic holders — are shaped for specific jobs and save time that general-purpose tools cannot. Welding pliers cut wire, clean nozzles and remove spatter in one tool.
