Buying guide: Oxy-Fuel Outfits & Torches

They are the standard tool for cutting steel plate, heating for bending, and brazing where no electrical supply is available.

Cutting capacity comes from tip size and oxygen supply, not from the torch body. A medium-duty outfit with a 1/8 in tip cuts about 3/4 in steel; a heavy-duty outfit with a larger tip reaches 4 in and beyond. The torch handle itself is rated by the cutting attachment and tip that fits it.

Torch styles follow a naming convention — Victor-style, Harris-style and Smith-style torch tips are not interchangeable even when they look similar, because the seat angle and thread differ. The torch series determines which tips fit.

Outfits are sold with or without cylinders. Cylinders are a separate purchase and often a separate licensing or delivery arrangement, which is why empty-tank outfits are common. Everything else in the set — regulators, hose, torch, tips, spark lighter — is included.
