Cylinder handling is also a safety concern — a full cylinder that falls and shears its valve becomes a projectile.
Cylinder stands, brackets, wall mounts and floor stands keep cylinders upright and restrained. Single-cylinder stands suit portable work; double and multi-cylinder racks are for shop installations. Most jurisdictions require cylinders to be secured against falling, whether full or empty.
Carts and trucks move cylinders safely. Cylinder carts are designed to keep the cylinder vertical during transport and to keep the load balanced; a hand truck without a cylinder bracket is not adequate for a full size cylinder.
Dewars and cryogenic containers hold liquid gases — liquid argon, nitrogen and oxygen — and hold far more gas per unit volume than compressed cylinders. They vent continuously by design as the contents boil off, so they are used where gas consumption is high and continuous rather than intermittent.
